St Thomas Aquatic Center

Designing a sound system for any space usually involves a myriad of problems. Many of these resultant problems are difficult to define and even harder to solve.

Adding the reflective surfaces of a pool and waterproof room to the equation increases that difficulty.

Experience, superior equipment and a customer with the budget and desire to succeed are an absolute necessity.

EMI Audio, Bose and St Thomas University brought those requirements to this installation. The result is an Aquatic Center sound system that coach Tom Hodgson called "...the best in the country."

After consulatation with the customer it was determined that this system needed exceptional intelligibility, simple and easy to use controls and inputs for wireless mics, CD players and an ipod interface.

EMI Audio used it's extensive knowledge of sound system design software to design and predict the sound quality of this space. Our mastery of Bose® Modeler® sound system software provided the tools. Our 35 years of experience gave us the expertise to design the layout and controls for this installation.

The aquatic center in the newly opened Anderson Athletic and Recreation Center contains an eight-lane, 25-yard by 33-yard pool for swimming as well as a separate diving area.

A spectator area with seating for more than 400 people is located on the north end of the venue.

Bose DS-100 SE speakers were chosen (a total of 33 were used) in a distributed system. These 100-watt full-range loudspeakers (outdoor rated) combine full bass, high fidelity and proven reliability with sleek, contemporary styling.

Crown CTs amplifiers provide the power for the system. One advantage of Crown CTs series amplifiers is that tthe power stays the same at almost any impedance. This allows the 70V system to provide all the power needed with plenty of headroom. The headroom (reserve power) prevents distortion and speaker damage helping to assure good sound and long speaker life.

A Bose ControlSpace system was used to provide the mixing, EQ and signal processing. The room controller has simple, elegant user controls to allow customers to access and operate the system with confidence.

The end product is a sound system that can live a long and reliable life in this tough humid environment. It provides highly intelligible sound at a very high quality - everywhere in the room. This sound system matches the design and build quality of this excellent space. We agree that the sound system in the St Thomas Aquatic Center is "...the best in the country."
